Part a:
- Find an online periodical (newspaper, journal, magazine, etc), not a math periodical, economics is fine, however.
- Total bee losses per year, as a percent
- http://www.ars.usda.gov/News/docs.htm?docid=15572
- Recall the criteria for determining relationships that are functions.
- Graph of the function must pass the vertical line test
- The equation of the function has only one output for every input.
- Search the periodical for a relationship that represents a function (in graph, table, or formula format).

- Explain in words the meaning of this relationship.
- This table represents the percent of the total US bee population lost in each year since 2010. So, in the year 2010, 33.8% of the bee population was lost.
- Determine whether the function is a linear function.

- The function is not linear
- If the function is linear, explain in detail how you know the function is linear (be sure to refer to the average rate of change).
- If the function is not linear, explain in detail how you know it is not linear (be sure to refer to the average rate of change).
- The rate of change between each equal interval is not the same.
- Determine whether the function is a mathematical model (be sure to use function notation.)
- This is not a mathematical model because the bees lost is not dependent on what year it is.
- Function notation: loss=f(year)
Part b:
- Recall the criteria determining relationships that are not functions.
- Graph fails the vertical line test
- There is more than one output for each input
- Find an online periodical with a relationship that is not a function.

- Explain in words the meaning of this relationship.
- This table is recordings of the BACs of males after a certain number of drinks. It shows the relationship between the number of alcoholic drinks consumed and the Blood Alcohol Concentration in a grown man.
- Explain in detail how you know the relationship is not a function.
- This is not a function because some inputs, such as one drink and four drinks, have more than one output.
Well it's good to know that bees are declining less and less every year.
ReplyDeletewhy is it good? =(
Deleteclare,
ReplyDeleteperfect articles and explanations for both examples. i like that you showed ROC calculations for your first example and very creative choice for your second example!
good job!
