This the relationship between the amount of pirates and the average temperature
It is not a linear function
I could tell from the slope of the line in the graph. The average rate of change between 1820 and 1860 is less than that of the average rate of change between 1920 and 1940.
Yes it is because the amount of pirates has a direct impact on the temperature (According to the joke at any rate so it doesn't really)
Part b:
If there is more than output per input then it is not a function
http://www.healthchecksystems.com/heightweightchart.htmExplain
Relationship between weight and height
I know it is not a function becuase there is more than output per input. For instance when the input, height, is 4'10 the outputs, weights, are 102-111, 109-121, 118-131 meaning that it has more than one output for the one input of 4'10. It also means that it won't pass the vertical line test.
Great explanation of how you proved that between pirates and temperature is not a linear function. Average rate of change was the best way to prove that. Just one tiny thing: include a small calculation example to prove your explanations.
ReplyDeleteGood explanations and interesting articles. You could use some more explanatory calculations but I personally accidentally left those out.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading about your first example. It is very original! I used a similar example for my part b. Good work!
ReplyDeleteGreat way of providing your information it was very straight forward and easy to understand. Maybe add a little more to some explanations.
ReplyDeletehey, matt,
ReplyDeletenice examples and straightforward explanations. i must say that next time i'd like to see a little more in your explanations, especially when explaining the ROC and linearity. you forgot to use function notation in the mathematical modeling explanation (although, i like humor). other than that, good job.
