Summary Of 365 Penguins:

-365 Penguins is a wonderful and exciting book for the whole family! It is a book written by authors Jean-Luc Fromental, with Joëlle Jolivet and it is about a family who wakes up on New Year's morning to a delivery man dropping off a package on their doorstep. When the family opens the package they are surprised to find a penguin inside. The family has no idea who sent the penguin to them, but only that they are asked to feed it and take good care of it. The very next morning another surprise box is delivered containing another penguin. Yet again the family has no idea who sent the penguin.  There is another note which has the same instructions as the last one did.Day after day after day penguins keep arriving to the families home without any knowledge of where they are coming from. The family does there absolute best to take care of the birds but the vast amounts of penguins begin to overwhelm the family, becoming a problem for them. It is getting harder and harder to feed and house all of the cuddly penguins. The house is beginning to become very cramped. The family is getting tired of having to share their home with all the penguins. On the last dat of the year the last penguin is delivered. At the end of the year on December 31st they find the man behind all of these mysterious gifts. It is Uncle Victor, who is trying to move the penguins to the north pole by sending them to their house first. He soon explains his reasons for sending the penguins. He is trying to help them survive due to the problems of climate change which is slowly decreasing their living space. So Unlce Victory is not crazy but a helpful man!!This reason makes the family happy that they never got rid of any of the penguins throughout the year.

 Mathematical concepts of the Book:

      - 365 Penguins helps students understand the following concepts such as
understanding of the calendar year by knowing  how many months we have in a year,
how many days are in a whole year, how many quarters are in a year, even how many weeks are in each month of the full year, along with many other concepts about the calendar year. This book relates to our recent lesson of placing our investments in banks to calculate the future values of different bank that offer a variety of different interest options, ultimately helping us decide which bank will be a better choice in the long run. The knowledge of the calendar year is manly used a lot with calculating  interest because we must know the exact amount of time we are calculating to figure out our future value of our investments. Whether it be, a daily increase for a set number of years or even a quarterly increase for a set number of years, our knowledge of the calendar is very important in figuring this information out!. This book teaches concepts such as there are 12 months in the year,  half a year is 6 months or written as 1/2 a year.  Even more complicated concepts such as 4 quarters in a single year can be learned. In the end this book gave me a better understand of the calendar year and in turn helped me understand the current lesson even better!! This is a great book on the current lesson we are working on!

 Reasoning for Picking this Book:

-Using both literature and pictures to describe a concept to children is a great learning activity because the fun colorful pictures tend to keep the children both interested and attentive to the material being presented. The children are learning while they view the activity as fun, making the learning process a interesting experience for them. Usually in a lecture setting it tends the get very long and boring, resulting in the loss of focus from the children. The young children lose concentration quickly and tend to not absorb the messages that is presented by their instructors. But with a book filled with colorful pictures however, the attention is keep very high and as a result the child learns something in the process of reading the story without even fully knowing it.  The reason I have chosen this book is because it has a fun story line filled with amazing pictures and will keep children’s attention on the story throughout the entire book. The book teaches the children about the calendar days in a fun and educational manner in which it makes learning the concept fun! With many visual pictures for the children to view, this book is a great way to teach the children of these new mathematical ideas in a fun, but educational way. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who plans on either teaching the calendar days or plans on learning them for their selfs in a creative way.

  2. Adrian, I like the story you picked and the way that you related it to math. At first, I was unsure of how it was going to connect with math, but your interpretation of the concept of finance and interest rates is a great match.

  3. i think that your explanation about how the book 365 penguins relates to the mathematical concept of interest rates is very thoughtful.

  4. adrian,

your opening sentence was so gripping that i got so excited to read the rest of your post! i agree with alessandro that at first i didn't know where you were going with this story, although it was a cute story. however, you did a good job of relating it to a prerequisite skill that students should have in order to determine future values. i should have read this to the class when i got so many students asking how many weeks were in a year! nice job!
